Book Review: Meant to Be Mine

Meant to Be Mine is Becky Wade’s newest novel, and is wonderful just like her other two [click here for my reviews of her other books]. I was sent a complimentary copy of this novel as part of Bethany House Publishers‘ book review program.

Here is a description of the book from the publisher:

Ty Porter has always been irresistible to Celia Park. All through high school–irresistible. When their paths cross again after college–still irresistible. This time, though, Ty seems to feel exactly the same way about Celia. Their whirlwind romance deposits them at a street-corner Las Vegas wedding chapel.

The next morning they wake to a marriage certificate and a dose of cold reality. Celia’s ready to be Ty’s wife, but Ty’s not ready to be her husband. He’s a professional bull rider, he lives on the road, and he’s long planned to settle down with the hometown girl he’s known since childhood.

Five and a half years pass. Celia’s buried her dreams so that she can afford to raise her daughter. Ty’s achieved all of his goals. Or thought he had, until he looks again into the eyes of the woman he couldn’t forget and into the face of the child he never knew he had.

How much will Ty sacrifice to win back Celia’s trust and prove to her that their spontaneous marriage can still become the love of a lifetime?

As usual, my five point review:

  • This is the second book in a series about the Porter family, and it was just as precious, romantic, and indulgent as the first! I love how the author makes her characters come alive. I always walk away from a Becky Wade novel in a happy mood [and not because I read this one on the beach last month!]. I feel like the characters are friends, and not every author can create consistently endearing characters, novel after novel.
  • One thing that impressed me about this book was its unpredictability and uniqueness. First off–what wasn’t unpredictable: that Celia and Ty will fall back in love. That’s the premise of ALL these books, and I’m sorry if I ruined anything for you. 🙂 But anyways…the book begins with Ty’s proposal to Celia…and it’s not written in retrospect. See? Unique. What book does that? The rest of the novel is a series of unpredictable choices and plot twists all related to the way Celia and Ty rekindle their relationship. It is adorable the way that Ty works to redeem himself in Celia’s eyes. Adorable AND inspirational. If only we could be so dedicated to someone we love!
  • I also appreciated the secondary characters in this book. Addie, Celia and Ty’s daughter, is great. She’s five but wise beyond her years and serves an important role in the story. She is precious and shy, with a big heart, love for fairytales, and cowboy boots. Celia’s uncle has a big personality and is an amusing foil for Addie’s seriousness, and his role as protector of his girls is awesome. He’s the kinda guy you want on your court!
  • My least favorite character is Ty’s “other woman,” Tawny. She sounds exactly as her name makes her sound [and my apologies to the nice Tawnys out there… tv and books just give that name a bad rap, imo]. What was a bit disturbing about her was her pursuit of Ty as a married man. I wish this had been more denounced in the book–though Ty’s refusal of her affections was pretty strong.
  • This book was just great. Another unique love story by Becky Wade, with a setting just as great [a small Texas town]. I wish I lived in one of the charming Victorians described in the book. Oh, and for you foodies… Celia is a baker and has a sweet gig in the local bakery. Becky, you did good with this one! 🙂 Thanks for another good read. Hope you guys all check it out!

Book Review: Undeniably Yours

Recently I read Becky Wade’s lighthearted novel, Undeniably Yours, on a lazy Sunday afternoon. In an entire sunny afternoon on the porch. It was glorious, and I am so glad that Bethany House Publishers has this awesome book review program.

Undeniably Yours by Becky Wade - reviewed on thepajamachef.com

Here is a description of the book from the publisher:

When Meg Cole’s father dies unexpectedly, she’s forced to return home to Texas—and to Whispering Creek Ranch—to take up the reins of an empire she’s never wanted. Can the handsome manager of her father’s Thoroughbred farm help Meg face her fears and embrace new hopes for the future?

And as usual… my five point review:

  • This is Becky Wade’s second book, and since her first, My Stubborn Heart, remains one of my favorite contemporary Christian books of all time, this one had a tough act to follow. But it was absolutely glorious! And not just because I read it outside in one afternoon. Just as I was writing this post, I learned that it is the first in a series–and I am super excited for more to come! This isn’t your average Christian romance. It is fun, flirty, and just plain ‘ole cute. I love Becky’s style!
  • One thing I appreciated about this story was that the main male character, the handsome manager of the horse farm, Bo Porter, is just SO well written. He is not the average romantic one-dimensional character. Though he is the sort of guy who would probably be swoon-worthy in real life, his depth of character, love of family, and protector of all really comes through in the book. So often romance novels follow just the female character, but Becky does a great job balancing between the pair. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s a Texas cowboy! 🙂
  • Overall, this story has a theme of overcoming challenges–romantically, professionally, and ultimately, spiritually, as Meg learns to trust God despite those in her past who have hurt her. Meg is likeable throughout the entire book, but her weakness makes her kind of annoying at first, until we learn more about her past. I loved rooting for her to overcome the obstacles in her life to move on in her future.
  • Continuing on in that vein, I did appreciate the faith-based perspective of many of the characters in this novel. There was a bit of drama involving Meg’s past [okay, if you’ve read the book… more than a ‘bit’ of drama] and I liked how that allowed Meg to grow in faith. However, apparently the faith-based portions may be a response to Becky Wade’s first novel that was criticized as not being Christian enough as related to language, content, and themes. [See this and this for more details… this is the first I’ve heard of it, and one of the things I liked about My Stubborn Heart was that it was so atypical Christian.] So while I didn’t find anything wrong with either book, I can see why some people are concerned. Moving right along…
  • I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good, quality read. Yes, it is a Christian romance. Yes, it is a bit sappy and cute. But it’s not completely predictable and it is well written, which is more than I can say for some Christian fiction. It might be in a different vein than her first novel, but I still loved it and will be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!

Book Review: My Stubborn Heart

Another day, another installment of Sarah’s semi-embarrassing reading habits. Sigh. At least I’m honest about it. 🙂 Like I mentioned before, I recently signed up to review books for Bethany House Publishers, a well-respected publisher of Christian fiction and other Christian titles, through their blogger review program. The most recent title I received was Becky Wade’s My Stubborn Heart.

cover of My Stubborn Heart bookHere is the description of the book from the publisher:

Kate Donovan, burned out and in need of an adventure, is only too happy to help her grandmother restore her old childhood home. But when she encounters the man hired to renovate the house–a former hockey star who’s wounded and hiding from everything and everyone–Kate discovers bringing him back to life might be the best and most daring job of all.

And what did I think about this book? Well, in five points… here you have it.

  • This is a book I can hardly find fault with! I just want to live in its pages and experience Kate and Matt’s love story for myself [even though my own is pretty great too :)]. Matt is the former hockey star turned historic home renovator referenced above, by the way. As I kept reading, I just didn’t want this story to end! Sequel, sequel, sequel. 🙂
  • That being said… the major fault with this book was that I didn’t necessarily agree with how the author dealt with faith and Christianity. Yes, Kate prayed and went to church but I felt like overall the faith part of the book took a backseat to the romance, which is fine, but it’s just something to be aware of. One other theologically questionable part was that Kate practiced yoga frequently. I know that’s an iffy subject in some Christian circles, but my personal convictions lead me to wary about yoga even as a form of exercise due to its origins. If you are a Christian, this topic is between you and God and I urge you to research this subject and make an informed decision.
  • I loved learning about how Kate’s character grew as a result of her blossoming friendship and romance with Matt, as well as her grandmother and her grandmother’s friends. Even though the book treats faith on a surface level, it was pretty obvious that Kate was growing and was letting God shape her path in life, even through the hard times. Definitely an encouragement to me!
  • I won’t give away any spoilers, but this book and the outcome is NOT as predictable as 95% of the Christian fiction out there. And I absolutely love that!
  • Lastly, I love Becky Wade’s well written yet relaxed, casual writing style. Her style fits so well with the quirky, spunky characters of her story… this is the perfect summer Christian chicklit/beach read. I don’t usually reread Christian fiction because some of it’s pretty lame, but this book is one I’m definitely keeping on my bookshelf. I hope you’ll check it out too!
